Habitat for Humanity
Sir Sam Steele Housing Development
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Teaming up with Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg (HFHW) to build the Greenest Affordable Housing Development in Canada, Friesen Tokar has produced design drawings for single family as well as side by side units (duplexes) on the site of the former Sir Sam Steele School. HFHW purchased the site on Nairn Avenue from the Winnipeg School Division in October of 2007. In its largest initiative to date, the homes built by HFHW will be built to both the Manitoba Hydro PowerSmart Gold standard and to the LEED® for Homes Silver standards. The north side of the property, facing McCalman Avenue, has been divided into 15 lots, 14 of which will be used to build single family homes with the final lot being developed as a playground. The south side of the property, facing Nairn Avenue, will be used to construct 10 side by side units. Site construction on the project began in February 2009. In total, 34 Habitat families will call the area home by 2011.
